How to get to Ilha Grande
Ilha Grande is about 150 km from Rio De Janeiro and 450 km from Sao Paulo. You can easily connect to Ilha Grande from either city.
Ilha Grande is a car-free zone, you can't fly into the island and there are no cars allowed also.
The main town in Villa Grande is Vila do Abraao, this is where you'll be headed to after leaving Rio or Sao Paulo.
To get to Vila do Abraao you have to get to either one of three port towns on the mainland and connect by ferry to the island.
Mangaratiba- Port town closest to Rio
Conceicao de Jacarai- closest to Ilha Grande, and has the most boat trips to Ilha Grande.
Angra Dos Reis- This is the closest port town for those in Sao Paulo.
Transport tip: Don't drive to any of the port towns since you can't cross to Ilha Grande in your car.
How to Get to Mangaratiba
From Rio to Mangaratiba, take the Costa Verde bus from Nova Rio station. Fare R$37 and takes 2 hours.
Important tip: There's only one ferry trip from Mangaratiba to Ilha Grande daily at 8.00 am daily. They can be several private boat trips but that depends on demand and season. To catch the ferry you have to leave Rio at 5.00 am with the first Costa Verde bus.
The ferry takes 1 hour 30 minutes to cross from Mangaratiba to Abraão.
Getting to Conceicao de Jacarei
Conceicao de Jacarei is the best point port town to use. There are 4 daily ferry trips and several boat trips to Ilha Grande from Conceicao de Jacarei.
To get to Conceicao de Jacarei take Costa verse buses from Nova Rio station. You can also take buses heading to Angra dos Reis and ask the driver to drop you off at Conceicao de Jacarei. There are about 6 daily drips to Conceicao de Jacarei and 12 to Angra dos Reis
Bus trip duration: 2 hours 30 minutes.
The ferry takes about 50 minutes to get to Abraão from Conceicao de Jacarei. Small boats can take about 20 minutes to cross.
Getting to Angra dos Reis
Unlike the other 2 port towns, Angra dos Reis has an airport, most people just fly in from either Rio or Sao Paulo.
Bus transport is also available from either Nova Rio station or Tietê bus station in Sao Paulo.
Bus trip duration from Sao Paulo: 5 hours. From Rio, buses take 3 hours and 30 minutes.
Ferry crossing time: 1 hour 30 minutes.
All bus terminals in all 3 towns are within walking distance from the docks.
