It's difficult to get around Cambodia with English

  • From my experience travelling in Cambodia a few months ago, I find that locals mostly do not speak English
  • People working in the tourist industry, like hotels, tour guides, staff at attractions, airport, local transportation providers, have a conversational command of English, but regular people mostly don't speak English at all. I tried to engage in some conversation with locals but gave up very quickly
  • Khmer (the local language) is also very hard to pick up and unless you live there for many years, it's probably impossible to learn enough to have any semblance of conversation with anyone
  • But, many public signs have English translation on them, so it makes getting around pretty manageable
