Safety measures you need to take when visiting Caracas

  • The security situation in Caracas is dire due to the recent acts of political violence between government supporters and anti-government protesters.
  • The major safety problems are the drugged homeless people living all over the city and muggers with daggers.

The following advice, most of which is common sense, will guide you for a safe stay with minimal trouble.

  1. Restrict your activities to daytime but be vigilant as crime here strikes at any time.
  2. Avoid walking alone and don't venture into dodgy-looking places. Always trust your instincts.
  3. Don't board taxis on the streets. Instead, call them or board trusted private transportation.
  4. Don't flash any electronic devices and avoid wearing jewelry.
  5. Carry copies of important documents but leave the originals in your hotel.
  6. Know your surroundings. In case you are lost, try not to show it. Be confident until you seek direction from a trusted individual, preferably in a mall.
  7. In public transport, try to seat at the front and avoid using electronic devices that may attract attention.
  8. NEVER sleep in a public spot.
  9. Always dress like common Venezuelan ( jeans and short sleeved shirt ).
  10. Always carry a "decoy" wallet with small bills. In case you are robbed, don't argue. Simply hand over what's asked of you.
