Cheapest way to get from CGN airport to Cologne city center

  • Taxi and train are the two main ways to get from the Cologne-Bonn Airport (CGN), which is the main airport that serves Cologne
  • I took the train because it's significantly cheaper (2.80 euros vs. around 30 euros for a taxi), and it runs very frequently (once every 20-30 minutes)
  • To take the train:
  1. Follow the signage in the airport for the airport train station, which is right in the airport in the underground level
  2. Buy a ticket from the machine for S-train number S13 or S19 to Köln Hauptbahnhof (Cologne Station). S trains have logos that look like this:
  3. Check the screen for the time/platform of the trains. You need to look for S13/S19 going to Sindorf or Düren. On the screen the word "Gleis" means platform
  4. Board the train and get off at Köln Hauptbahnhof (should take around 25 minutes), which is right in the middle of the old city, about 300 meters from the Cologne Cathedral. From there you can also take metro connections to other parts of the city
  • Note that you don't need to buy another ticket when connecting onto other tram/metro from Köln Hauptbahnhof, because the 2.80 euros you paid at the airport is good for the entire transit system for 90 minutes
  • Google Maps will be your friend when you're trying to figure out which train/tram to take to get from Köln Hauptbahnhof to your hotel
