Cham Museum Da Nang Introduction

Museum of Cham Sculpture Da Nang is the largest museum of exhibiting Cham artifacts in Vietnam, belonging to Da Nang Museum. This is a museum built by the French, specializing in collecting, storing and displaying relics on the sculpture art of the Champa Kingdom found in Cham towers and strongholds in the coastal provinces of South Central highland from Ha Tinh to Binh Thuan provinces.

Champa Museum History

In the late 19th century, Quang Nam's envoy, Charles Lemire, from France, carried out the archaeological work of Cham cultural relics and brought the relics to be exhibited in Da Nang. Later, in 1900, the Vien Dong Bac Co Institute (École Française d'Extrême-Orient) conducted archaeological excavations on a larger scale. Since then, the need to build a museum in Da Nang for Cham antiques. In 1902, Henri Parmentier of the Vien Dong Bac Co school officially proposed the construction project and was carried out by two French architects, Delaval and Auclair. The result is a building with some Cham architectural features was built in Da Nang.

The Cham Museum was built in 1915 until 1919 by the Vien Dong Bac Co Institute, completed and inaugurated with 160 sculpted antiques.

The original collection, collected by 19th-century archaeologist Henri Parmentier, is supplemented by the following findings. In 1927, architect J. Y. Claeys proposed to expand the museum, but the project was delayed until 1936. On March 11 in the re-opening of the museum in the presence of Parmentier, the Vien Dong Bac Co Institute honoured him by changing the name of Cham Museum to Musée Henri Parmentier. The new area is used to receive additional collections of excavated artifacts in Tra Kieu and Thap Mam in Binh Dinh province.

In 1946, when the Franco-Vietnamese War spread, the Cham Museum Danang was raided. Archives and artifacts were stolen. By the year 1948, 150 antiques were collected, some of them lost in Laos.

Under the Republic of Vietnam, this facility was named the Cham Museum. In the 1950s and 1960s, Nguyen Ba Lang architect of the Archeological Institute enlarged the area of ​​the exhibition halls in a harmonious way, in keeping with the original architecture. Nguyen Xuan Dong, who had worked with Parmentier, was appointed director. In 1972, Nguyen Khon Lieu took charge.

During the Vietnam War, through the movement of the Guimet Museum in France, the Cham Museum in Da Nang was well-guarded, and there were always regular guards so it was not damaged.

Only after 1975 did the authorities acquire it and by the end of the 1980s were a number of antiquities stolen by intruders.

More than 40 years later, in 2002, a 2-storey building with about 2 thousand m² of the display area and about 500 m² of the warehouse was built in the back.
