Best time of the year to visit El Calafate, Argentina

El Calafate is a major tourist hub in Patagonia, serving as the base for visitors going to the Glacier National Park (where one of biggest glacier in South America — Perito Moreno Glacier — is located in) and other attractions in southern Patagonia

The best time of the year to visit El Calafate and the surrounding area is December to February

  • December-February is the peak summertime for this region. The weather is the warmest in the year (day time temperature will be around 20C / 68F), you get the longest sunlight hours, and it also happens to be the least rainy and driest time of the year too
  • However, you should keep in mind that November-March are the busiest, most touristy months of the year because the climate is so agreeable. So expect there to be lots of other people in town and the major attractions including Perito Moreno Glacier. Things will be pricier during this time
  • You shouldn't rule out visiting El Calafate in the winter time (May-August), because it lets you avoid all the tourists. Very importantly, winter does not get too cold in El Calafate. In the winter, the day time temperature will still be 5C-7C (41F-45F), so it's not terribly cold. At night it does get below freezing but you'll likely be indoors at night anyway. And the biggest benefit is that you avoid dealing with all the other tourists. The Perito Moreno Glacier and other parks are all open all year round, so you don't miss anything by going in the winter. However, day light will be shorter and weather will be more inclement in the winter. The shoulder months (April, September, October) are also pretty nice, with fewer tourists than the summer and acceptable weather conditions
