How to see the tanneries in Fez

  • I believe there are 2 main tanneries in Fez. We went to the one called Chouara Tannery (pronounced like shoe-wara). The other one is called Sidi Moussa I think
  • It's not super clear how to see it, since it's not an open attraction with entrance and stuff

Here's what you need to do to see Chouara

  1. Go to the street called Rue chouara, which runs along the west side of the tannery (see my map below). Link to Google Maps
  2. Go into any of the many leather shops on the east side of the street, and ask the employee that you'd like to see Chouara Tannery (if you speak French or Arabic, even better)
  3. The employee will take you up the stairs to the terraces that overlook the tannery. That's it
  4. Spend as much or little time as you like. At the end of it, the employee will likely try to sell you some leather goods. If you don't want to buy anything, just tip them 5-10 dirhams.
  • We were told by a local that the stores are legally obligated to let you see the tannery. So they can't compel you to spend money
  • Apparently you can also ask to get a tour of the tannery itself on the ground level. We didn't do this but you can always ask (they'll expect a tip though)
