How to use the free CAT (Central Area Transit) buses to get around George Town

  • CAT stands for Central Area Transit and is a free shuttle bus service offered by Rapid Penang, the public bus operator in Penang
  • This bus is good for getting around the most central/historic part of George Town, there are many interesting attractions that it does not serve, like Penang Hill, Gurney Drive, Kek Lok Si
  • The route starts and ends at the Weld Quay Bus Terminal next to the Pangkalan Raja Tun Uda ferry terminal that connects George Town with Butterworth on the mainland
  • Bus runs clockwise from Weld Quay Bus Terminal. First bus departs a 6:00 in the morning and last bus departs at 23:40 at night
  • Frequency of the bus is every 20-30 minutes
  • Again, fare is free for everyone, Malaysians and foreigners alike, and you can simply hop on and hop off the bus as often as you want
  • Check Rapid Penang's website for more info: http://www.rapidpg.com.my

Here's a map of the route and all the stops. You can zoom in and click on the pins to get info and GPS coordinates of the stops (green pin is the starting and ending station of the loop where the first bus departs from at 6:40AM):
