How much money to budget for trip to Hong Kong

Get $50 for writing a tip!
  • I'd say overall, excluding flight, hotel and shopping, plan to spend per person:
  • $200-$300 HKD ($25-$40 USD) per day for a tight-budget trip
  • $500 HKD ($65 USD) per day for a comfortable trip
  • Hotels can get pretty pricey:
  • Hostels and 1-2 star hotels: $250-$550HKD ($30-$70USD) per night
  • Mid range 3-4 star hotels: $800-$2000 HKD ($100-$250 USD) per night
  • Fancy 5 star hotels: $1600-$4700 HKD ($250-$600 USD) per night
  • Airbnb entire place: $300-$1600 HKD ($40-$200 USD) per night
  • Airbnb private room: $150-$750 HKD ($20-$95 USD) per night
  • To give you a ballpark of how much other things things cost:
  • Public transportation: $12-$18 HKD ($1.5-$2.5 USD) per ride for most places within the city
  • Taxi: $60-$120 HKD ($8-$16 USD) per ride within the city
  • SIM card: $70-$90 HKD ($9-$11.5 USD) for a week-long Hong Kong-only SIM card
  • Street food and cheap/local restaurants: $50-$80 HKD ($7-$10 USD) per meal
  • Mid-range restaurants: $120-$240 HKD ($15-$30 USD) per meal
  • Fancy restaurants: they all have what I call "international prices", comparable to New York and London. Easily over $60 USD per meal
  • Bottle of water: $16 HKD ($2 USD)
  • Movie ticket: $90-$120 HKD ($12-$15 USD)
  • Bars: $40-$50 HKD ($5-$7 USD) for a beer, but usually half price during happy hours between 5pm and 9pm. Cocktails range from $70-$150 ($9-$20 USD). Most places don't have cover charges, but the ones that do can charge anywhere between $100-$400 HKD ($13-$50 USD)
  • Ocean Park admission: $438 HKD ($56 USD) for adult
  • Disneyland admission: $619 HKD ($80 USD) for adult one day
