How to get to Inle Lake from Mandalay

  • Inle Lake is about 160km southeast of Mandalay
  • The best way to get there is via a short 30-minute flight. Alternatively, you can also take a 8-hour bus for cheap. There is no direct train option as far as I know
  • How to fly between Mandalay and Inle Lake:
  • Flight time: 30 minutes
  • Total travel time: 3-4 hours
  • Air fare: $60-$80 USD one way
  • Total cost: $90-$110
  • Airlines: Golden Myanmar, Mann Yadanarpon, Air KBZ, Myanmar National
  • The airport you need to fly to at the Inle Lake side is called Heho, which is a town 25km northwest of the lake. From Heho airport, you need to taxi to the town of Nyaungshwe, which is the base used by tourists visiting Inle Lake. Taxi costs about $20USD each way
  • Mandalay airport is located a 50 minutes taxi ride south of town. Taxi fare is about $10 USD. Taxi is the only way to get to this airport
  • I used Skyscanner when for flight tickets in Myanmar and I thought it was pretty good
  • How to bus between Mandalay and Inle Lake:
  • Bus travel time: 7.5-8 hours
  • Total travel time: 8.5-10 hours
  • Bus fare: $10-$14 USD one way
  • Total cost: $15-$20 USD
  • Departure bus station: Chan Mya Shwe Pyi Bus Station in Mandalay. You need to taxi there from central Mandalay and it's a 15-20 minute ride
  • Schedule and frequency:
  • There are both day buses and overnight buses
  • I used MyanmarBusTicket.com to check schedule and it's pretty easy to use. It's a local travel agency that serves foreign travellers so it's all in English
  • Arrival bus station: all buses take you to the town of Nyaungshwe, which is the base for visiting Lake and where all the hotels are. Specific arrival stations are different depending on the bus you take but they're all in the city centre. JJ Express, which is the most popular bus operator among travellers with great reviews on Tripadvisor, stops at this spot
  • How to book bus tickets: you should be able to just show up at the bus station and get your tickets with cash kyat and your passport. I didn't take the bus from Mandalay to Inle, but I did bus from Mandalay to Bagan and I didn't pre-book ahead of time. You can also book online from MyanmarBusTicket.com, which lets you pay by credit card
