Best way to get to Koh Chang, Thailand

  • Koh Chang is located 275km southeast of Bangkok, off the coast of eastern Thailand. Most visitors go to Koh Chang from/through Bangkok because it's the main transfer point from the rest of Thailand. If you're coming from Chiang Mai, Phuket, Koh Samui, or just about anywhere in Thailand aside from Pattaya, the only way to get to Koh Chang is to through Bangkok

  • There is no airport on Koh Chang, so the only way to get there is by ferry. There are two ways to get there from Bangkok which I will talk about in more details below

  • Option 1) Flying to Trat Airport (TDX) then ferry overUser submitted photo of Koh Chang
  • Trat Airport is located just 20km north of Koh Chang, on mainland Thailand. It's owned and operated by Bangkok Airways
  • Total travel time: 5-7 hours
  • Total cost: $120-$180USD per passenger each way
  • There are four daily flights connecting Bangkok Suvarnabhumi airport (BKK) with Trat, operated by Bangkok Airways. In fact, the only flights in and out of this airport are by Bangkok Airways, and only to/from Bangkok
  • Flights to Trant from BKK is very short, just 1 hour of flight time. There are four flights a day, departing at 8:20am, 11:40am, 2:45pm, and 4:55pm
  • Flight fare is around $100USD each way
  • Once you land in the airport, you can either take a minibus or private transfer to to Ao Thammachat Pier, located here. This pier is where all the ferries to Koh Chang depart from. You usually pay a single fare for the entire trip (meaning the fare includes the price of both the vehicle to the pier as well as the ferry to Koh Chang). The last ferry to depart for Koh Chang is at 7pm
  • Minibuses is the cheaper option, it costs 450-550 baht ($15-$18USD) per person each way. The trip to the pier takes around 20 minutes, and you'll board a ferry there which departs once every 45 minutes or so. The ferry itself takes about 30 minutes, arriving at Koh Chang Pier, located here. Minibuses can be arranged upon arrival at the airport, and it's a tiny airport and you will see the minibus desk at the arrival area
  • Private transfers from Trat airport is a lot more expensive, but it's much more comfortable than minibuses. Cost is around $70USD per car for a 3-seater sedan, or $80USD per car for a 10-seater van. Again, this fare includes the price of ferry. If you have a lot of people in your group it's actually the best way to go. Not only will the van get you to the ferry terminal, it will also drive you to your hotel on the island after you get off the ferry on Koh Chang. You can book your private transfer at the airport or ahead of time on websites like Klook and Viator (put Koh Chang as your destination and filter for "transportation" category). I recommend booking ahead of time.
  • After you get off the ferry on the island at Koh Chang Pier, if you booked a private transfer, the car will continue to take you to your hotel on the island. Otherwise, you will have to find a Songthaew (a white pickup truck that seat 10-12 people in the back that serve as the main transportation method on the island), which will take you to your hotel for around 150 baht. You don't have to worry about getting one of these, as soon as you get off the ferry you will be almost inundated with touts trying to get you into a Songthaew. This is what the Songthaew on Koh Chang looks like (luggage goes on the roof):User submitted photo of Koh Chang

  • Option 2) Bus or van from Bangkok to Trat then ferry overUser submitted photo of Koh Chang
  • If you don't want to fly, the other option is to take a bus or minivan from Bangkok to the ferry ports in Trat, then take a ferry to the island
  • You don't have worry about booking two the bus/minivan separately from the ferry. You just buy a single ticket all the way to Koh Chang, and the bus/minivan company will take care of getting you onto the ferry including the ferry ticket
  • Total cost: $15-$40USD per passenger each way
  • Total travel time: 9-11 hours
  • There are a number of buses and vans departing from various boarding points in Bangkok for Trat, including:
  • Mochit New Van Terminal, located here
  • Ekkamai Bus Terminal, located here
  • Suvarnabhumi International Airport BKK (by this operator)
  • The offices of various van companies all over Bangkok (addresses will be specified at the time of booking - see below on which websites to book)
  • Hotel pickup
  • If you go to Mochit New Van Terminal, Ekkamai Bus Terminal, or Suvarnabhumi airport, you should be able to buy tickets to Koh Chang on the spot. The ticket will be inclusive of the ferry prices. However, as I'll mention below I highly recommend booking your ticket online ahead of time
  • Prices are around $15-$20USD per passenger all the way to Koh Chang island, or $40USD including hotel pickup
  • Travel time is 7.5-9 hours for the bus and ferry
  • It's best to book online ahead of time. The two websites I recommend for booking buses in Thailand are (just search for Bangkok to Koh Chang and pick the date you need to travel):
  1. 12Go: https://12go.asia
  2. Bus Online Ticket: https://www.busonlineticket.co.th
  • When you buy the bus tickets it will show you exactly where the boarding point is (or if it's a hotel pickup). Payment is by credit card
  • Note that the ferries operate between 6am and 7pm, but when you buy tickets
