Why you should not drink alcohol in Libya

  • Consequences of drinking in Libya include:
  • Alcohol is illegal in Libya ( for both locals and foreigners)- though it is sort of banned on paper, I actually realized that there are numerous places all across Tripoli selling alcohol just that it is very expensive, in the places where they have alcohol it goes for not less than $100.
  • Cheaper alcohol alternatives do exist (bokha, Libyan homemade liquor) but it is often poisoned and can cause serious health risks. Plus there are also regular crackdowns on alcohol dealers and you could get arrested while there.
  • NOTE: Don't try to bring alcohol into Libya, it'll just be taken away at the airport.
