Best way to get into the city from Luang Prabang International Airport

  • The airport is situated about 4 kilometers outside of city center
  • To get to town from Luang Prabang Airport, there are 3 options:
  1. Taxi - best option for most people
  2. Tuk Tuk - slightly cheaper but not worth it in my opinion
  3. Hotel pickup - use it if available but make sure it's not too expensive
  • There is no public transportation like buses or trains from the airport to town
  • Always check with your hotel first to see if they offer pickup service and how much they charge for it. If they charge less than 50,000 LAK ($5.75USD), then go with that because that's how much taxis cost
  • Taxi:
  • As mentioned, taxi from Luang Prabang Airport to anywhere in the city center is flat 50,000 LAK (currently $5.75 USD) for a standard 4-passenger car. For a 10-passenger van, the fare is 100,000 LAK ($12USD)
  • To ride a taxi, you simply find the taxi stand inside the terminal building after you exit the baggage claim area:User submitted photo of Luang Prabang
  • Purchase the ticket here with cash (either LAK or USD works) and then you will be taken to your taxi. Very simple
  • When you arrive at your destination, no need to give any tips to your driver, he won't be offended. If you want to tip, they will not say no either. Most American tourists tip about $1 USD

  • Tuk Tuk:
  • There is no tuk tuk on airport premise
  • If you want to take a tuk tuk, you need to walk 100 meters to leave airport grounds to the main street (coordinates: 19.899781, 102.168092). Here, you can flag down lots of tuk tuks
  • You need to negotiate a fare with your tuk tuk driver. Tell him the name and address of your hotel, show him on Google Maps, and then agree on a fare before you get on
  • To most places in the city center, the fare is around 40,000 LAK ($4.6USD). If you're a good negotiator, you might be able to get it down to 35,000 LAK ($4USD). I don't think you'll find anyone willing to take you for less than that
  • As you can see, there is not much difference in fare between taxi and tuk tuk. This is why I recommend taking taxi
  • Again, no need to tip your driver. Tipping is not a habit in Laos

  • Hotel pickup service:
  • A minority of hotels will pick you up from the airport for free
  • Most of them will charge you a fare that's similar to taxi at around 50,000 LAK
  • I've heard some hotels quoting guests as much as $18USD for pickup. This is extremely high and not worth the money
  • So check with your hotel first and see what they can come up with but do not pay much more than 50,000 LAK
