Best way to get to Luang Prabang from Siem Reap

  • The best way to get to Luang Prabang from Siem Reap is to fly, but it's also possible to go by land with minivan/bus. There's no train option, unfortunately
  • These two cities are about 1000km apart so it's quite a distance apart

  • Flying from Siem Reap to Luang Prabang:
  • This is the most popular way for tourists to get between these cities. For good reason too, it's much faster and not too much more expensive
  • There are two direct flights operated by Lao Airlines and Vietnam Airlines at around 5pm everyday, landing at 6:30PM
  • The flight takes 1 hour and 30 minutes
  • Fare is about $150-$160 USD per person one way

  • Siem Reap to Luang Prabang by land:
  • I don't recommend doing this but it's possible to do if you have lots of time and little small budget
  • Total cost is $80-$100 USD per person
  • Total travel time is going to be 36-48 hours
  • It's not going to be a comfortable ride, especially going from Siem Reap to Vientiane, so make sure you're mentally prepared for almost 2 days on a minivan and bus. The segment from Vientiane to Luang Prabang is much better because you can choose buses that have lie flat beds (these are actual, completely flat beds, and not just seats with big inclines). More details below on them
  • Step 1: Take a bus from Siem Reap to Vientiane
  • Asia Van Transfer (AVT) offers a minivan service that takes you from Siem Reap to Viantien, via the Tropaeng Kreal border (this border accepts Visa on Arrival right now, but check the official website to make sure it still accepts VOA:, look for "Veunkham" checkpoint
  • Fare is $60 USD per person
  • This leg takes 22 hours, departing at 8am and arriving at 6am the next day. It has a connection in Pakse
  • You can book on AVT's website:, or through 12Go (on 12Go search for Siem Reap to Vientiane). 12Go lets you book with your credit card directly online, whereas with AVT's website you have to email them to make a booking. But booking directly with AVT can save you up some money
  • The minivan departs from AVT's office in Siem Reap, located here
  • It arrives at the Southern Bus Terminal in Vientiane, located here
  • You can read AVT's reviews:
  • On Google
  • On 12Go
  • Step 2: Take a bus from Vientiane to Luang Prabang
  • From Vientiane, there are a lot more bus and minivan options to go to Luang Prabang, both day buses and overnight ones
  • Fares range from $22-$35 USD per person
  • Takes 8-13 hours
  • Many of these buses/minivans depart from the Southern Terminal, so you don't even have to go anywhere after AVT drops you off in Vientiane
  • They either drop you off at Luang Prabang's Southern Terminal or Northern Terminal (Northern one is across the street from the airport)
