The new vehicle restriction policies you need to be aware of in Medellin

  • Recently Medellin developed a vehicle rationing system aimed at decongesting the roads in the city.
  • If you'll rent a car when in Medellin then you need to be aware of these regulations.
  • This system is known as pico y placa and it applies from Monday to Friday during rush hours. ( 7.00- 8.00 am and 5.30 - 7.00 pm)
  • Vehicles whose number plates end in the following digits are restricted from accessing some areas of the CBD during the named days.
  1. Monday - 6, 7, 8, 9
  2. Tuesday- 0, 1, 2, 3
  3. Wednesday- 4, 5, 6, 7
  4. Thursday- 8, 9, 0, 1
  5. Friday -2, 3, 4, 5
  • Medellin municipal can also restrict vehicles during times with high pollution which is mostly during the transition from the dry to the wet season. This policy was adopted in February 2019 and will also follow the pico y placa system if it needs to be implemented.
