How to visit the Yucatan Peninsula as a solo female traveller
Many people view Mexico as unsafe, however, don't let such stereotypes prevent you from visiting this beautiful side of the country. Yucatan is generally a safe place for solo female travelers. Just be practical and have these tips in mind.
Being a solo female traveler myself the best thing I could do for myself is stick to popular destinations. These include
Cancun- Known for its beaches and crazy nightlife.
Playa del Carmen and Cozumel- One of the top places for scuba diving. Cozumel is easily accessible by ferry from Playa del Carmen.
Akumal- A popular place for snorkeling and swimming with sea life.
Bacalar- This is one of the off the beaten path destination in the peninsula, a good safe place to get away from the crowds.
One the most common scams here is taxi drivers planting drugs on passengers then blackmail them, in most cases, these are usually unofficial taxis. Their meters are also most likely tampered with.
If you want to ride solo, take an official taxi but I recommend using collectivos for short distances, these are passenger taxis. Make sure you don't carry a lot of luggage so that you can fit in comfortably with the locals.
For long distance journeys, ADO buses are a reliable and safe bus service provider and connect to many places in this region and even to Mexico city.
