Random immigration checkpoints in Mexico

  • It's pretty much not uncommon to find military and traffic police checkpoints when traveling all over Mexico.
  • Last time I was in Mexico I encountered about 2 traffic checkpoints joined with an immigration checkpoint, usually, a picture of your passport and Mexican tourist card (FMM) are enough to prove you are in Mexico legally, avoid carrying your original documents, alternatively, you could make copies of your documents ( worked for me). Failure to prove your stay in Mexico is legal at these immigration checkpoints can get you stranded here for some 2-3 hours before you can get cleared by immigration.
