How long to visit the Neuschwanstein Castle

  • Visiting the Neuschwanstein Castle will take about about 1 day in total:
  1. Getting there from Munich: 1.5-2.5 hours (driving is the quickest way to get there)
  2. Ticket pickup, getting to the castle from the base: 1 hour
  3. Tour of the castle itself: 1-2 hours
  4. Checking out the surrounding area, including Marienbrücke to take photos: 1-2 hours
  5. Getting down to the base from the castle: 30 minutes
  6. Getting back to Munich: 1.5-2.5 hours
  • If you don't plan ahead of time (most importantly booking your ticket online ahead of time), you may need another 30 minutes to 2 hours to get your ticket, and "downtime" while you wait for your visiting time block (tickets are only for specific time and the earlier ones start selling out very quickly)
  • It's completely feasible to do a day trip from Munich to visit Neuschwanstein. In fact, most people visit it on a day trip
  • But there are hotels at the base of the castle and in the nearby town of Füssen (only 10 minutes away by bus or 40 minute walking), so if you want to take it easy, you can stay the night before or after your visit
  • One of the benefit of staying the night before is so that you can get to the castle before all the tourists from Munich start arriving after 10:30am. That's when the castle get really crowded
  • Also, the times above is just the bare minimum. The entire area surrounding the castle is gorgeous with lots of trails in the mountains or along the lake (Alpsee lake). You can easily spend another 2-3 hours just wandering (or I saw a lot of people biking too) in the countryside or nature around the castle:User submitted photo of Neuschwanstein CastleUser submitted photo of Neuschwanstein CastleUser submitted photo of Neuschwanstein Castle
