Best way to get to Phuket from Bangkok, Thailand

  • Phuket is located 700km south of Bangkok in southern Thailand
  • There are 2 ways to travel between these two cities: 1) by flight and 2) by coach bus. There are no train service to Phuket from anywhere
  • For most people I'd say the best option is to fly. Buses take an entire day to travel, and believe it or not flights is about the same price as buses if you book 3-4 months ahead of time

  • Option 1) Flight from Bangkok to Phuket
  • There are LOTS of flights between Bangkok and Phuket everyday, from both of Bangkok's airports — Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang Airport (DMK)
  • Flight time: 1h10min - 1h20min depending on flight
  • Earliest flight: 5:10am from DMK and 6:10am from BKK
  • Last flight: 10:20pm from DMK and 9:30pm from BKK
  • Fare range: can be as low as $15USD each way with AirAsia, but most flights are in the range of $30-$50USD each way
  • Airlines that fly this route (listed from best rated to lowest rated):
  • Thai Smile Airways (owned by Thai Airways): website, rated 4.5/5 on Tripadvisor
  • Thai Airways: website, rated 4/5 on Tripadvisor
  • Bangkok Airways: website, rated 4/5 on Tripadvisor
  • Nok Air: website, rated 3.5/5 on Tripadvisor
  • AirAsia: website, rated 3.5/5 on Tripadvisor
  • Thai Lion Air: website, rated 2.5/5 on Tripadvisor
  • VietJet Air: website, rated 2.5/5 on Tripadvisor
  • I suggest using websites like Skyscanner to find the best flight options. The flight schedule changes every season depending on demand, so it's best to use search engines to find the best current option
  • Getting to Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) can be done by taxi for 300-500 baht ($10-$16.5USD) or train (Airport Rail Link) for 150 baht ($5USD). Getting to Don Mueang Airport (DMK) can only be done by taxi for about 200-300 baht ($6.5-$10USD)
  • Getting from Phuket Airport to anywhere on Phuket will need to be done by either taxi or prearranged airport transfers. Taxi fare from the Phuket airport will cost 500-900 baht ($16.5-$30USD) in total depending on which part of the island you're going to. Going to Patong Beach is about 650 baht

  • Option 2) Coach bus from Bangkok to Phuket
  • The only alternative to flying is to take a coach bus from Bangkok to Phuket. This option obviously takes a lot longer, but prices are usually cheaper than flying so if you're on a tight budget with lots of time on your hand this option is what you may want to use
  • Travel time: 12h - 14h15min
  • Price: $30-$50USD per passenger each way
  • Departure times: you will find buses throughout the day. Some buses depart at 6-7am and get to Phuket by 6-7pm. Overnight buses are also an option departing at 6-8pm and arriving at 6-10am the following day. Some buses even depart in the afternoon and arrive at around 3am in the morning. It's best to check the current schedule of each of the bus companies I will list below and see which one fits your schedule

  • How to book tickets: there are 2 good websites you can use to book the bus tickets in Thailand
  1. https://12go.asia - this is a very large transportation booking site for not just Thailand but other parts of Southeast Asia too. You can use credit card to book
  2. https://www.busonlineticket.co.th - I haven't used this one before but it looks to be pretty decent for Thailand. Payment is also with credit card
