How to get to Salar de Uyuni by bus

  • There are a two options to get to the town of Uyuni (which is pretty much the staging point to see the Salar) from La Paz, flying being the quickest and most comfortable (when I looked it up it was around CAD$250)
  • There isn't any train that runs between the two
  • We took an overnight bus from La Paz instead because it was cheap - it's the cheapest option by far
  • The bus company we used was called Todo Turismo
  • The bus left at 9pm from Terminal de Buses Lapaz, which is pretty conveniently located in La Paz, and arrived at Uyuni at around 5 or 6am
  • Cost was 250 boliviano, around $30 Canadian dollars ($25USD). We just booked directly on their website. They take Visa and Mastercard
  • They provided a meal on the bus which was nice
  • You should know that the bus ride was not comfortable at all. Nothing wrong with the bus itself, it's as standard of a tourist bus as you'd expect. The problem is that the road between La Paz to Uyuni felt like it was filled with potholes. I barely slept at all the night because it was a non-stop, aggressively bumpy ride. On top of that, it was freezing as hell. The blanket they gave barely did anything
  • We also arrived so early that nothing was open yet. We wandered around in the freezing cold looking for a hostel to shower in; we eventually found it but it was a pretty miserable experience. Learn from our mistakes, book a hostel in the town of Uyuni so at least you have somewhere to crash
