Neighborhood safety tips for Sao Paulo

  • Sao Paulo is not among the safest cities in the world
  • Robbery (even at gun point) happens pretty regularly to tourists, so be very careful
  • I lived there for a few weeks last year, while nothing happened to me, I heard enough stories from locals and other expats to know that things can get pretty scary pretty fast
  • Here's a map from my experience of the safe and not-so-safe areas in SP for touristsUser submitted photo of Sao Paulo
  • Use the map as a rule of thumb! There's no area in SP that's completely safe, especially at night. Use common sense:
  • Don't wear anything flashy
  • Don't carry an obviously expensive DSLR visibly. Put it in your bag
  • Keep a low profile
  • Keep an eye out for your belongings at all times
  • Be aware of your surroundings. If the area you're in looks dilapidated and run down, turn around and leave, even during the day
