How to get to Huanghuacheng Great Wall from Beijing city center

  • Huanghuacheng Great Wall is 68km directly north of Beijing, in Huairou district
  • Getting there is the easiest on a tour, but many people go there by independently by bus (I did)
  • There are two bus options available, a direct bus that only runs between early April and end of October, and a connecting option via the city of Huairou
  • Option 1: direct bus (the best option)
  • Only operates only on Saturdays, Sundays, and other public holidays, between April and October
  • Departs from Dongzhimen in Beijing and goes directly to Huanghuacheng. Only one bus a day, leaves at 8:30am but the exact departure time can be earlier or later
  • Fare is 35RMB each way
  • Step by step guide:
  1. Take Beijing subway to Dongzhimen (东直门) station on line 2 or 13
  2. Follow overhead signs for Bus Transfer Hall (should be outside of exit B)
  3. Find the platform for bus 418. This direct bus is not 418 but it shares this platform
  4. Confirm that the bus you're boarding is going to Huanghuacheng Water Great Wall (黄花城 or 黄花城水长城). Pay cash and board the bus. You cannot use the Beijing transit card (Yikatong) to pay
  5. The bus will take you all the way to the entrance of the Great Wall
  6. Return bus is at 4pm. Don't miss it
  • For the latest info on this bus visit http://dingzhi.bjbus.com/holiday/detail/46. It's in Chinese only but you can use Google translate
  • Option 2: connecting bus via Huairou (bus 916 Express then H21)
  • This option is all public transit, so you can pay with your Beijing subway card (Yikatong)
  • The entire journey will take 2.5-3.5 hours each way
  • Step by step guide:
  1. Take Beijing subway to Dongzhimen (东直门) station on line 2 or 13
  2. Follow overhead signs for Bus Transfer Hall (should be outside of exit B)
  3. Find the platform for bus 916 Express (916快) to Huairou (怀柔). Fare is 12 RMB and you can pay by cash onboard the bus or use Beijing transit card. The first 916 Express leaves Beijing at 5:50am.
  4. Take 916 Express to its final stop at Huairou Bus Terminal (怀柔汽车站). Will take 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic
  5. Walk 300 yards west and then north (like this) to the stop for bus H21, located at this spot on Kaifang Road (开放路). Make sure you're on the western side of Kaifang Road
  6. Take bus H21 to its final stop at Xishuiyu (西水峪). First bus is at 5:35am and last bus is at 6:20pm. The bus should take 40min-1hour depending on traffic. Fare is 9RMB and you can pay with your Beijing transit card
  7. Walk north for about 300 yards to get to the entrance to Huanghuacheng. You can also just follow the signs from this point on as it's inside the park area
  8. The last H21 back to Huairou departs from Xishuiyu at 7:05pm. The last 916 Express back to Beijing from Huairou is at 6:50pm. So realistically you need to leave Huanghuacheng at around 5pm to make it back to Beijing.
