How to apply for a visa (special permit) to visit Tibet

You need to apply for a special Tibet travel permit that is different from your Chinese visa. You can only apply for this permit AFTER you've been granted your Chinese visa

  • You can only apply for this permit through a travel agency can apply - note that not every agency is certified to do it, so make sure you go with a reputable one - Im just gonna go with one I found on google
  • Required Documents:
  • a copy of your passport
  • a copy of your visa to China
  • a daily travel itinerary (issued by a local, certified agency)
  • your flights/train tickets’ details
  • Processing time: 10 to 21 working days
  • *IMPORTANT* They don't allow foreigners to travel in Tibet on your own. You can either travel with a group or in a private tour, but you must be accompanied by a local Tibetan who's a certified tour guide. Even if you travel with a Chinese friend, you still need to get the local guide or go on a certified tour
