how to get to Tumpak Sewu Waterfalls in East Jave, Indonesia

Tumpak Sewu means a thousand waterfalls, it's one of the most popular attractions in East Jave with its magnificent panorama of waterfalls. Here's a brief from The Mandagies original post:

Getting to Tumpak Sewu

  • The Closest major cities are Malang (2-hour drive) or Surabaya (5-hour drive)
  • Follow the Google Map if you are driving on your own, but don't trust Google Map's ETA, the traffic in Indonesia is bad so double the estimated time required on the road
  • From Malang, half the journey is a winding road up and down mountain ridges and through tiny villages
  • When you get close to the village of Sidomulyo, you will see many signs for waterfalls along the way as there are many waterfalls in the area, stick to the ones that say Tumpak Sewu/Coban Sewu
  • The entrance Fees: 10,000 Rp. each, ($0.75) + 5,000 for parking.

Getting to the viewpoint

  • There is a paved path from the parking lot to the viewpoint. After a short 10-minute walk you will hear the waterfall and see the full view

Trekking down to the base

  • Wear proper footwear as you will need to go through streams and climb over slippery rocks

  • Bring your own toilet paper and small bills to use the washroom
  • Avoid going down to the base after rainfall or during wet season (November and March)
