Soft soldering and hard soldering
Soft soldering is the preferred technique for electrical wiring, water pipes and hobby. With soft soldering, the solder - mainly consisting of tin - is heated to a maximum of 450 degrees. The soft soldering tool is a soldering iron or a soldering gun.
Brazing is intended for heavy-duty joints, such as machine or vehicle parts. A gas burner is required to achieve the required temperature (up to 700 degrees). Since we are providing tips for beginners in this article, we will not consider this soldering method further.
Which metals can you solder?
Metals that can be soldered with normal solder include copper, iron, steel, tin, bronze, silver, brass, and zinc. You cannot solder chrome and for aluminum you need a special flux.
Soldering iron, soldering gun and soldering station

The most basic tools for soldering. A soldering iron with adjustable temperature is preferred.
Its name comes from the pistol grip. The soldering tip is a metal loop through which a high electric current is sent, which means that it heats up quickly. A disadvantage is that it switches off almost as quickly to prevent overheating, often within 1 minute. Then you have to wait until it has cooled down enough to continue.
The professional equipment. A soldering station works on low voltage. The big advantage is that you can set the temperature exactly, which is especially useful when soldering fragile electronics and fine hobby work. A soldering station comes complete with soldering iron and accessories.
How to solder?
Solder will not adhere to dirty, rusty or greasy metal. Sand the parts to be connected thoroughly before reaching for the soldering iron and wipe the sanding with a clean cloth. Especially for larger connections, it is advisable to then coat the parts with soldering fluid or solder paste. These products clean and degrease, so that the solder will adhere better.
Heat promotes the adhesion of the solder. Preheat the parts to be soldered by holding the soldering iron against it for a few seconds. Note: do not do this with cables and electronic components, as they can be damaged by heating.
3. Apply solder
As soon as the solder starts to melt, keep it on the joint until it has bleed out and the seam between the parts is closed. This takes a few seconds at most. Do not use more solder than necessary: solid is fixed and a thick bump does not make the connection stronger. The parts must remain immobile until the solder has solidified. And watch your fingers, or better yet, wear some good, close-fitting work gloves. Safety goggles are also highly recommended, as the hot solder can splash.
If necessary, you can make the connection more beautiful with a file or sandpaper when the solder has hardened.
If the solder does not bond well, but does form spheres, the metal is probably not clean. Sand again, apply solder and try again.
If the solder does not or hardly liquefies, your soldering iron does not have enough power, or you are using the wrong solder. Choose a different solder or buy a more powerful soldering iron.
Keep your soldering iron clean
A soldering iron requires little maintenance, but the pin must be clean for proper operation. Wipe it clean immediately after every soldering job, you can easily do that with a damp cloth.
